Applefest – Franklin, PA 16323

By ryan | Filed in Places to visit | No comments yet.

As fall approaches and the weather starts to chill, you may find yourself feeling gloomy thinking about winter. Franklin has come up with a way to bring a little cheer before the snow starts. Every year Franklin, PA hosts Applefest. A great time to get out and sample local foods, and crafts. Vendors also poor from all over to participate in this annual event.

For me the highlight of the week long festival is the Sunday car show. I love wandering up and down the blocked off streets looking at all the classic cars, and even some modern cars, that have been brought in to show off.

A new tradition has been a local farm equipment company having pedal tractor races for the kids. This year my son won a pedal at said races. Very cool.

We usually try to make it out every year. We sample some food, look for stuff, and enjoy the cars. It’s just a great way to get out and enjoy a small town.

We purchased this van in November of 2009 with only 32k miles on it. It came with a 3 month 10k bumper to bumper warranty and a 5 year 100k power train warranty. We bought it after several used vehicles had failed us and we were looking for something with a warranty and comfort for our family of 6. At the time of purchase we were not planning to be full timing in a camper around the country (see our blog here). I did have them give us the tow package when we bought it though since we were living on a farm at the time and I had a trailer for 4 wheelers and hay and things like that.

This vehicle was very comfortable for our big family. It was comfortable to drive for long trips, and everyone had their own space. The 6 liter v8 had plenty of power although the fuel efficiency was garbage. We only got about 14mpg with it on average. The van drove easily and with it’s big mirrors was easy to see around your vehicle and even behind you. The front and rear a/c made for a comfortable ride in any climate.

We did find that this thing was a pig in the snow. Even when we put the best snow tires we could find on it, it would still slip and spin. Being rear wheel drive it just would barely get out of the drive way in the winter. The traction control did little help its problem.

Later when we began towing our new camper with it, it had enough power to pull it for the most part. We had trouble on hills and found that the RPMs had to be kept high to pull hills. We also got stuck on a larger hill and had to be towed as it just didn’t have the torque needed for towing.

We ran this van to 105k miles when we overheated it towing heavy coming across some mountains. I wasn’t paying attention to gauges and ended up warping heads in the motor (stupid).

Overall I would recommend this van to bigger family. Just be prepared to spend a lot on fuel. It’s worth it for the comfort factor. Light towing it will do fine, but stay below the weight levels with it. With proper maintanence you could see hundreds of thousands of miles easily.

2008 Chevy Express Van
We got it for under $20k with only 32,000 Miles on it. You can probably find them even cheaper as there is not much market for vans these days.
We had a door latch that was broken when we bought it, but it was fixed under warranty. Other then that we didn't really do anything besides oil changes, fuel and tires.
Seating for 12. 6.0 Liter gas engine. 4 speed auto. A/C, power windows, am/fm cd stereo and more.
This vehicle is a great people mover that is very comfortable for everyone riding. It towed our camper ok, but there was a lot of sway and play. The weight of trailer was just too much for it even though on paper it was with in spec. I would own another one if we weren't towing with it. I felt the fuel mileage was lousy though. Only about 14mpg on average and only 6mpg while towing.

Big site at a cheap price. However no electric hookups, but there was plenty of shade.
State park campground with bikes trails, hiking, big playground, and lake to swim.
Staff was friendly and helpful.
Bathrooms were alright. Mostly clean. Private shower stalls but open changing room area. Windows were are eye level allowing anyone to look in on folks showering or changing. Use caution while dressing and keep shower curtain closed tight.
No internet.
Spot was good sized gravel pad with table and nice fire ring. Spot was mostly level and easy to get into if you are experienced.
NO laundry.
Big state park around a lake.
Had a good time hanging with friends here. Would use it again.

Decent value. Electric only spot. GPS was way way off. Make sure you use other address.
Decent sized spot. Two playground available on a paved loop in a state park. Lots to do.
Staff was very helpful and friendly.
Clean state park type bathrooms. Semi rustic. Cleaner then most state parks with have been to with individual shower stalls.
No internet. Did have 3G cell service though.
Paved back in site. Was a decent size with 30amp electric.
No laundry available.
State park on a lake.
Paved loops for bike riding. Sites were semi secluded from each other and decently sized with picnic table and fire ring. Not bad for cheap price.

Price: $46 a night (includes kid fees)

Detroit Greenfield RV Park
Campground was decent. Little dirty since there was a lot of trees, grass couldn't really grow.
Playground, hiking trails, lake to swim and fish, and game room gave plenty for families to do. They charge extra per kid though and the water slide costs extra.
Staff was friendly and helpful.
Bathrooms had separate private showers that each had their own room. They were fairly clean given all the dirt outside.
Internet was available, but the connection was slow. Not enough internet for the amount of sites they had.
Spot was decent size with table and fire ring. Bring a carpet or rug or something though.
Laundry onsite price wasn't bad. Typical stuff, nothing out of order.
Water slide, bike trails.
Decent place. Will probably stay again if we are back in the area. It's pretty dirty with no grass around sites, but it's manageable.

$10 for overnight parking with electric and use of pool. Super deal.
Pretty much just a big field behind the Ramada with electric hookups for campers. We did have access to pool as well.
Friendly helpful staff.
Nothing available for campers
Internet available, but not very fast or reliable. 4G was available.
Just a spot in a field with electric.
Did not see any laundry available.
Decent buffet restaurant onsite.
For overnight parking and pool access you really couldn't beat the price. Worked out well for us.

Munce's Konvenience‎ - Campground
Price wasn't bad for a full hookup. The grass spot was level, but full of mosquitoes. We did not spend any time outside.
There was a playground and large field for the kids to play in. Campground was fenced. It had a slight redneck feel, but seemed ok.
Lady at counter seemed bored and uninterested, but was not rude or mean.
Dark dingy and dirty. Needed updating.
No internet available.
Decent size spot with picnic table and fire ring. Full hookups. Level grass spot.
Did not see any laundry onsite.
Other amenities
Nice small town. Some stuff to do around. Fishing river nearby. Not a bad deal. Worked fine for us for the night.

Price was a little high for not having full hookups on a grass spot. The spots where big and there was an awesome view and stuff for kids to do.
There was a playground, and they did not charge extra for kids. Plenty of room to run, swim, and boat.
Staff was super helpful and friendly.
Bathrooms were clean and private.
Internet was available, but it came over a satellite or broadband card and was slow. The signal was weak and we barely picked it up with our booster.
Spot was level grass. Had a picnic table and fire ring. I think it was a tent site since it only had 15amp eletric. We couldn't use A/C.
I did not see laundry onsite.
Other amenities
Good spot for a weekend or in a pinch. They did have full hook up spots, but not many of them. Lots of room to stretch out and the view is phenomenal!
